Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure

How we make money, how it does not influence our editorial choices, and how to opt out.

Summary

In brief

Halal Kitchen Atlas makes money from display advertising, affiliate links, occasional sponsored content, and our own info products (Ramadan ebooks, cookbooks). We only recommend products we have used or that our team believes will genuinely help our readers. Our editorial team decides what recipes to publish, not our advertisers.

How we make money

Halal Kitchen Atlas is a free-to-use website. Publishing thousands of tested, culturally reviewed, halal-verified recipes requires paying a recipe developer, a food photographer, a content writer, a designer, an SEO specialist, and a network of cultural and Islamic content reviewers. We fund this work through:

  • Display advertising (Google AdSense in our early months, then Ezoic, then Mediavine as traffic grows).
  • Affiliate commissions (Amazon Associates and direct halal food and grocery partnerships).
  • Occasional sponsored content, clearly labeled.
  • Info products we sell (Ramadan meal-plan ebooks, cuisine cookbooks, printable recipe cards).
  • Newsletter sponsorships (labeled in the newsletter itself).

Display advertising

You will see display advertising on most pages of the site. Ads are served by third-party networks (currently Google AdSense; Ezoic and Mediavine as we grow). We do not choose the specific ads shown to individual users; those are personalized by the ad networks based on cookies, browsing history, and other signals.

We prohibit ad categories that conflict with our values (alcohol, gambling, non-halal food products, adult content, and predatory financial products). Ad networks are instructed to filter accordingly. If you see an ad that violates these categories, please let us know so we can escalate to the network.

Some of the links on this site are affiliate links. When you click an affiliate link and make a qualifying purchase, we receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. We participate in the following affiliate programs:

  • Amazon Associates — links to cookware, cookbooks, halal specialty ingredients, and related products on Amazon (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other regions).
  • Halal meat delivery partnerships — direct affiliate relationships with halal meat delivery services (Crescent Foods, Midamar, ButcherBox halal, Haloodies, and others as we add them).
  • Halal grocery services — direct partnerships with halal grocery delivery and specialty ingredient brands.
  • Cookbook partnerships — links to publishers and authors of relevant cookbooks.
Amazon Associates disclosure

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. This does not affect the price you pay.

Every page that contains affiliate links carries an "Affiliate disclosure" notice at the top or bottom. Individual affiliate links are marked with the standard rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" attribute so search engines can identify them.

Occasionally we accept sponsorship from halal food brands or Muslim-focused businesses that align with our editorial values. When we do, sponsored content is:

  • Clearly labeled as "Sponsored" at the top of the article and in the byline area.
  • Marked with rel="sponsored" on any outbound links to the sponsor.
  • Written to the same editorial standards as our unpaid content — tested recipes, cultural accuracy, halal verification.
  • Never able to change our published views. If a sponsor pushes for us to alter our editorial opinion, we return the money and cancel the sponsorship.

Sponsored content is a small fraction of our total content. We would rather stay independent than publish sponsored fluff.

Editorial independence

Our editorial team decides what to cover and how to cover it. Advertisers do not see content before publication. Affiliate partners cannot request that we recommend their product over a competitor's. Sponsored content, when it exists, is clearly labeled and does not compromise our other coverage.

Our cultural reviewers and Islamic content reviewers are paid flat fees. Their compensation does not depend on the reviewer approving the recipe or content — they are paid whether they approve or reject.

How we choose what to recommend

When we recommend a product, brand, or service, we base the recommendation on one or more of the following:

  • Our recipe developer or team has actually used the product.
  • A cultural or Islamic content reviewer has recommended it based on their expertise.
  • A halal certification body has explicitly verified the product.
  • The product has consistent positive coverage from independent Muslim consumer sources.

We do not recommend products solely because they offer the highest affiliate commission. Where two products of comparable quality exist, we may prefer the one that pays us a higher commission, but only if we would have recommended it anyway.

Your choices

You are never required to use an affiliate link. If you would rather buy a product we recommend directly from the retailer without our commission, please do — we would rather you read our content than feel pressured to click through an affiliate link. Our goal is to be worth reading whether you support us commercially or not.
