Cookie Policy

What cookies we use, why we use them, and how to change your preferences.

Last updated: August 12, 2026
Effective from: August 12, 2026

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, which ones we use on Halal Kitchen Atlas, and how you can control them. It works alongside our Privacy Policy.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device when you visit. They are used for many purposes — remembering your preferences, understanding how the site is used, keeping you logged in, and (with your consent) personalizing advertising.

Cookies can be first-party (set by the site you are visiting — us) or third-party (set by services embedded in the site, such as analytics or advertising). They can be session cookies (which are deleted when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (which remain for a set period).

Cookies we use

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies are required for the site to function. They cannot be disabled.

Session and security cookies
Keep the site functioning correctly. May include CSRF protection tokens and session identifiers.
Cookie consent cookie
Records your choices about non-essential cookies so we do not ask you again on every visit.

Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used. Analytics cookies help us see which recipes are popular, where visitors come from, and how we can improve the site. Data is aggregated where possible.

_ga, _ga_<property_id>
Google Analytics 4. Distinguishes unique users and tracks user sessions. Expires after 2 years.
_gid
Google Analytics. Distinguishes users. Expires after 24 hours.

Functionality cookies

These cookies remember your preferences (such as recipes you have saved locally via our "Save recipe" button). Most of our functional storage happens in your browser's local storage rather than cookies, and is never sent to us.

Advertising cookies

When we display advertising through a third-party ad network (such as Ezoic or Mediavine, or Google AdSense as a starter network), those networks may set cookies to personalize ads to you, to prevent showing you the same ad repeatedly, and to measure ad effectiveness.

Third-party cookies

Some services embedded in the site set their own cookies, controlled by those services rather than by us. These include:

Google (Analytics, AdSense)
See Google's cookie information.
YouTube (when we embed videos)
May set cookies for playback preferences and view counts. We use privacy-enhanced mode where available.
Pinterest (Rich Pins verification, embedded pins)
May set cookies when you interact with Pinterest content on our pages.
Ad networks (Ezoic, Mediavine)
Set cookies to serve and measure advertising. Each has its own cookie policy.
Affiliate networks (Amazon Associates and others)
When you click an affiliate link, the destination site may set tracking cookies to attribute your purchase to us.

Managing cookies

You have several ways to control cookies:

  • Cookie consent banner — where required by law, we present a banner asking you to accept or reject non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time via the cookie settings link in the footer.
  • Browser settings — every modern browser lets you block cookies, delete existing cookies, or configure how cookies are handled. Instructions vary by browser: see Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or your browser's help documentation.
  • Advertising opt-outs — use the Digital Advertising Alliance, the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance, or the Canadian equivalent to opt out of interest-based advertising.

Blocking all cookies may affect how the site works.

Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" signal. The web industry has not agreed on a standard response to this signal, so we do not currently respond to it. Instead, we rely on the cookie controls described above.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be highlighted in a banner on the site.
